Rumors of Justin's (actual, rather than television) death have spread like wildfire—causing near mass hysteria on Twitter—on at least three separate occasions since 2009. Some of those rumors were reportedly staged by unBeliebers organized through the website 4Chan.com, where a number of super-successful Internet pranks have been hatched in recent years, including the phenomenon known as “Rickrolling” where Internet hyperlinks were disguised to lead to the video for ’80s crooner Rick Astley's song “Never Gonna Give You Up” instead of their purported destination.

Justin is a legendary prankster with a great sense of humor, and his reaction to the occasional widespread rumors of his demise—by, variously, a bullet to the heart, a car wreck, suicide, and a “late-night altercation” in New York City—has been lighthearted. “I'm not dead. I had to check on this one…but it turns out I'm alive” was his response, via Twitter, to the bullet-to-the-heart rumor in the summer of 2011.
